Americans are funny. We seek permission for the same things a child would, yet we place our entire identity on freedom and individuality. I was in a clothing store, not in America, and I asked the store clerk if I use the fitting room - counting item by item the pieces in my hand so she could give me a key to the room. She smirked and said, "you don't need to ask my permission to use the rooms, they're all open. Go ahead." She didn't care about the number of items in my hand or which room I used.

During the first few days of any transition, I always like to remind myself where I am. It helps me feel less out of control.
