    The Evanston Police Department welcomed its first high school intern, Yanelise Santiaguillo, this spring as part of Beacon Academy’s Experience Learning Program. Santiaguillo, a senior, did her 10-week senior internship in the department’s forensic science unit. An unconventional high school internship, certainly, but for Santiaguillo, it was exactly what she was looking for. Santiaguillo will graduate from Beacon on June 5 and matriculate to Loyola University to study forensic science.

    Zephyr Balch, who graduated from ETHS in 2019, will be 24 this summer, making him one of the youngest medics working in the emergency room at Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. What’s even more impressive, however, is that Balch is one of the more seasoned practitioners in his job on Lurie’s night shift, which comprises a comprehensive team at varying levels of expertise. One of the primary reasons for that, he explained, is that the night shift cohort generally includes newer employees.

    Evanston’s Safety Town, the summer day camp that teaches kids about potential dangers in an entertaining way, returns this summer — this time with one big change. This year, 8 year olds also are eligible to participate. The age range was increased to accommodate kids who may have missed out during COVID. Registration remains open for 4 to 8 year olds.
