There’s an exchange in the new miniseries The Four Seasons that will land with a lot of long-married women. Tina Fey’s Kate and her husband Jack, who’s played by Will Forte, are running late for an obligation, and Jack mentions that he hasn’t eaten all day. An exasperated Kate observes under her breath how nice it would be to be married to an adult who could meet his own needs.

Shortly after my mother’s 89th birthday I called her landline via Skype. It was our last such communication ever. Don’t worry, mom’s fine. Skype, however, is as dead as the dire wolf. Deader, probably, because nobody is trying to figure out how to bring Skype back. My mother was born before humans discovered how to use antibiotics and she’s still going. Skype was born in 2003 and only just made it past 20 years.

Of all the problems the world faces, providing enough water for drinking and sanitation is among the most solvable. Everybody agrees that humans need water. Nobody is morally opposed to providing it. The technology exists to bring water to most places. The earth has enough drinkable water, currently, to meet its needs.
