Some councillors questioned whether officers had the authority to make the closure decision.     Members of the strategic planning board were told yesterday (Wednesday) the council’s officers had received a late objection from the environment agency due to concerns about a culvert. Planning officer Daniel Evans said the site, which is south of Old Mill Road, already had an extant permission for residential development, so if councillors were minded to approve the application it should be delegated back to officers to resolve the matter with the agency.

    Cheshire East’s strategic planning board was unanimous yesterday (Wednesday) in giving the go-ahead for the development on the site of the former Towers and Progress Mill off Parsonage Street. The home, which will be run by Torsion Care Ltd, will provide residential care for older persons in need, as well as specialist dementia patient care.

    But one councillor said he hoped this was not seen as an invitation for developers to submit housing applications on land allocated for employment. The council’s strategic planning board yesterday (Wednesday) approved an application from Muller Property Group and McCarthy and Stone for a 49-apartment retirement living scheme at Maylands Park at Stapeley. It also approved a separate application, from Muller Property Group and Anwyl Homes, for 40 homes, including 12 affordable.

    Planners are recommending councillors give the go-ahead for 42 affordable homes on an Alsager site where an application for 55 was previously refused. In 2022, Cheshire East's southern planning committee went against the council officer's recommendation and turned down an application for 55 dwellings on the land off Close Lane on grounds of insufficient open spaces and garden sizes. Council planners say this latest proposal from Breck Homes deals with those previous concerns.
