How can room design shift to mirror family life in flux? It begins with solid foundations: floor-to-ceiling shelves hugging a door frame or cupboards filling an awkward crevice can house plush teddies now; baskets of bric-a-brac in years to come; and a collection of books further down the line. As for wallpaper, choose graphics untethered to a particular age bracket (think: abstract patterns or stripes, which are less likely to be outgrown or unloved).

As with all household bugbares, there are many ways to approach common pests in our homes. Some go down the natural route: pinecones laced with cinnamon and other aromatic spices on doorsteps are thought to prevent spiders.
