A man has died after being rescued from the River Soar in Leicester. The incident occurred near Mill Lane, close to De Montfort University campus, with Leicestershire Police responding to reports of a man in the water at 7.30pm on Saturday, October 26. A representative for Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that water rescue teams from its Southern Fire Station were dispatched to assist in locating and rescuing the man from the water.

An "explosion" at the University of Leicester has led to a fire breaking out and a room incinerated in the blaze with one person taken to hospital. Emergency services rushed to the site around 11.50am on Tuesday after receiving reports of a fire in the Henry Wellcome Building of the university campus. According to a Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman, it was an accidental blaze ignited by a leaky gas canister connection to a Bunsen burner.

A cat stuck on a roof in Leicester for several days had to be rescued by firefighters. Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said it received a call at 9.18am on Tuesday (September 17) reporting that the puss was stranded on a building in Welbury Road, in Hamilton. The caller said the feline had been on the roof for three days, but was not "physically trapped”, a service spokeswoman said.

Volunteers are being sought to spend time with children and young people in care. Leicestershire County Council is looking for “independent visitors” to spend a few hours a month engaging in “fun, simple activities” with the young people. The authority said the activities could be a walk in the park, a trip to the cinema or eating at a restaurant, and were an “important part of supporting vulnerable young people”.
