The American writer William James Stillman wrote in the 1890s that there was “nothing in the English landscape so beautiful as the common squirrel.” He meant the Eurasian red squirrel, which was Britain’s only native squirrel and once enjoyed the whole of England, Wales and Scotland to itself.
