Canada said it will begin patrolling its border with two Sikorsky Black Hawk helicopters as early as Friday, part of a comprehensive effort to beef up border security following tariff threats from U.S. President-Elect Donald Trump. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said it has procured two Black Hawks on lease from Helicopter Transport Services in Ottawa. They will join nine existing helicopters in the RCMP fleet, plus 60 new drones that will patrol Canada’s border with the United States.

L.A. County fire officials expect a Canadian CL-415 Super Scooper aircraft to resume flying today after ordering emergency repairs to one of its wings following a drone strike. The aircraft, on contract from the Quebec government, was out of service for several days after it suffered wing damage after colliding with a drone at the Palisades Fire late last week. The pilots were unaware they hit the drone, said L.A. County Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone on Friday, per CNN.

Canada is deploying more aircraft to bolster firefighting efforts in California, including waterbombers and helicopters equipped to fight fires at night from Alberta and more CL-415 aircraft from Quebec. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced the province’s support in a social media post, but did not specify the aircraft types involved. The province has historically leased or contracted air support to fight wildfires.

A CL-415 Super Scooper aircraft from Quebec was grounded Thursday after an unauthorized civilian drone collided with it in the Palisades fire area, California fire officials said. The collision occurred with an aircraft known as “Quebec 1” at around 1 p.m. local time on Jan. 9, per a statement from the Los Angeles County Fire Department on X. “Quebec 1 sustained wing damage and remains grounded and out of service,” the fire department said early Friday morning.
