The number of decisions in August 2024 by the Planning Inspectorate (PINS) was 1,524, falling slightly short of the average of 1,538 per month over the last 12 months. PINS has made a total of 18,458 appeal decisions in the past year. All decision times are measured from the day a valid appeal is received to the day a decision is issued. The number of cases closed has exceeded the number of cases received for each of the past 12 months, except for March and June 2024.

The first new deep coal mine proposed in the UK for 30 years has had its planning consent – granted by former planning secretary Michael Gove in 2022 – overturned by the High Court on environmental grounds. The ruling follows the precedent set out in the Finch ruling in July, whereby the Supreme Court determined that the ‘downstream’ environmental impacts of fossil fuel extraction should be factored into the decision to grant planning permission.
