Cellular senescence is a coordinated program activated in cells in situations of damage and oncogenesis, as well as in specific physiologic settings (1–3). The hallmarks of senescence are a permanent cell-cycle arrest, accompanied by a host of morphologic and metabolic changes, and, in some settings, a senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), which involves secretion of inflammatory cytokines.
