An Arab, deposed President Bazoum’s attempts to shuffle his Fulani-dominated Republican Guard, may have triggered the coup. With  French and US troops stationed there, and Russia in the background, the coup echoes far beyond Niger’s borders. The coup that took place in Niger on 26 July – whether it turns out to be successful or not – is a bad omen for the countries of the Sahel and brings into question the very sustainability of democratic governance in parts of Africa.
