A feed of southerly winds will bring warm air from north Africa and south-west Europe across the country accompanied by increasing humidity. There will be some sunny spells but also the chance of some heavy downpours and thunderstorms which could bring a lot of rain in a short space of time.

A yellow warning for thunderstorms has been issued by the Met Office for large parts of England and Wales. The warning, which covers the majority of southern England, parts of the Midlands and most of south Wales, comes into effect from 09:00 BST on Saturday and lasts until 18:00. Around 10-15mm of rain could fall in less than an hour while some places could see 30-40mm of rain over several hours from successive showers and storms, the Met Office says.

High pressure has dominated for much of meteorological spring - the months of March, April and May - bringing prolonged dryness and sunshine. But now low pressure is making a return with the promise of wetter and windier conditions. However, it may put a dampener on outdoor plans over the weekend.

Temperatures are currently expected to peak at 27 or 28C (81-82F) on Thursday - 1 May - but there is a small chance that 27C could be reached by Wednesday. That would mark the hottest April weather for seven years. The warmth will be accompanied by dry conditions and sunshine bringing high UV and pollen levels.

Published10 minutes agoA yellow weather warning has been issued by the Met Office with heavy rain set to affect parts of the UK over the Easter bank holiday weekend. The warning covers parts of south-west England on Good Friday and Saturday, where up to 75mm (3in) could fall. Other places will also see some wet weather but it will not be a complete washout. There will be sunny spells which will lift temperatures slightly above the April average. It means mixed prospects for bank holiday travellers.
