History was made Thursday night at Viking Field. Northwest senior Lupe Sanchez scored her 100th career goal and became the first person in the program to accomplish the feat. “She’s a goal scorer, that’s what she does,” Northwest coach Jess Herrmann said. “She wasn’t one that even really knew what her number was. She’s not one that was counting and keeping track. She really had no idea.”It wasn’t just one goal that Sanchez scored either.

The Grand Island Senior High girls soccer team hardly had a chance to blink or get set before it gave up the first goal of the game. Norfolk’s Yanxi Limonta spotted up from a free kick that was many yards beyond the penalty arc. She did her run up and then all of a sudden the ball was in the back of the net, less than a minute into the game. “That was a heck of a shot from 45,” GISH coach Bryan Ramallo said.

The Central Nebraska El Clasico Cup spent one year in Grand Island. But that was long enough, because on Saturday afternoon Kearney beat Grand Island Senior High 2-1 to get it back. “A little disorganized defensively early in the first half that gave them two quality opportunities which they had a few more than that in the first half. But outside of the two goals they had, there was maybe a couple other times where I felt nervous about them scoring,” GISH coach James Panowicz said.

Broxton Barrientos was due. Grand Island Senior High trailed Lincoln Northeast 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning in the nightcap of its home triangular. The senior, Barrientos, hadn’t recorded a hit all day and stepped into the batter's box with the bases loaded. Northeast pitcher Will Carlson fired a pitch with a 1-0 count. The next sound that could be heard was the crack of the bat and a roar from the home crowd and dugout as they watched the ball sail over the fence in left-centerfield.
