Class 4A All-State wide receiver Brody Jones has committed to South Alabama. The 5-foot-10, 165-pound senior caught 104 passes for St. Michael in 2024 for 1,581 yards and 15 touchdowns. He helped the Cardinals all the way to the 4A semifinals. Jones averaged 15.2 yards per catch and 113 yards per game. He also had offers from North Alabama and UAB. He is the son of former Kentucky quarterback Pookie Jones. Jones is coached by longtime NFL QB Philip Rivers.

Cottage Hill linebacker Shadarius Toodle is closing in on a final college decision. “I’m ready for it to be over so I can get focused on my team and get ready for a great year,” the 4-star senior said at South Alabama’s 7-on-7 tournament Tuesday morning. Toodle committed to Auburn during Big Cat Weekend last summer and said Tuesday he is still committed to the Tigers, though Georgia, Baylor and Michigan are also pushing hard for his services. “I’m still talking it over with my family,” he said.

Bob Jones pitcher Tanner Hermesch is the last man standing in AL.com’s search for the best high school baseball player in Alabama in 2025. Hermesch survived three rounds of fan voting, defeating Vincent’s Aiden Poe, American Christian’s Eric Hines and Deshler’s Garrett Reid. RELATED: Saraland star is softball player of yearIn the final, he garnered 79 percent of the vote against Reid. The Class 7A Pitcher of the Year went 12-1 for coach Jared Smith’s team with a 1.14 ERA.

It’s been a busy and -- as it turns out – big week for Lee Steele. The Orange Beach rising sophomore, while participating in basketball team camps at Alabama and Auburn, received football offers from both in-state SEC powers. “It’s the beginning of something big for him,” Makos’ football coach Wade Waldrop said. “Lee has the measurables that will naturally translate to the highest level of this sport.”At just 15, Steele is already 6-foot-6.

This is an opinion piece. Charles Kelly believes he and his staff have a “great advantage” at Jacksonville State in terms of high school recruiting. The first-year Gamecocks head coach spoke to the Alabama Sports Writers Association last weekend and emphasized that his staff would continue to put a large focus on high school student-athletes during the current transfer portal era.
