    During my first psychiatric hospitalization in 1998, I was strapped down, placed in 4-point restraints, and administered a painful catheter—apparently because I had peed on the floor during the course of my psychotic episode. A nurse was assigned to watch over me. I was terribly uncomfortable, and over and over I begged her to release me. Finally, after a considerable time, I was released. This blog is not about the cruelty of psychiatric institutions, although they can be cruel.
