    UK and European shares have followed Asian indices into positive territory this morning, after a remarkable session on Wall Street that saw US stocks swing wildly on fake rumours of a pause in US president Donald Trump’s tariff plan. The FTSE 100 was up 1.2%, or 91 points, at 7,793 shortly before 8.40am, while the pan-European Stoxx 600 index rose 1% in early trading.

    US stocks opened lower as a global selloff, sparked by President Donald Trump’s trade tariffs, continued. The S&P 500 fell 3.8% in early morning trading, having fallen more than 10% over Thursday and Friday. The open was less severe than futures markets had initially indicated, at one stage pointing to a 5% decline, but if the index closes at this level it will mean US stocks have entered a bear market with the S&P having fallen 20% from its recent high in February.
