The whole reason I started a poetry magazine was that I found myself judging lit mags left, right, and center and thought, “You know, better to build something myself. If I can’t do it right, then I’ll shut up, and it’ll be good for everyone. And if it turns out I can do it right, then…well, it’ll hopefully still be good for everyone.” Win-win, right?

Not everyone wants an agent. Not everyone published in top-tier magazines will attract an agent. And this is not a comprehensive list of all magazines that agents read. Since it is such a word-of-mouth, unpublicized aspect of the industry, I only included those where writers who have been published in them, or the editors of the magazines confirmed that agents do in fact read them (since those writers were contacted after being published in them — and I’m taking the editors at their word).

Those magazines who were founded over 100 years ago. I’d say a worry among most writers is that a magazine who publishes them might go defunct.

If you didn't know, Karina and I met through Lit Mag News, Becky Tuch's Newsletter about all things Lit Mag. I submitted an article to her called "My 6 Step No B.S. Guide to Submitting Short Stories to Lit Mags." In leu of pay, I chose a year's subscription to her newsletter where I saw her interview with Karina. If this hadn't happened, who knows? We may never have met. But, that's not the point of this.
