In her senior season playing for Marquette women’s lacrosse, Hanna Bodner was named Big East midfielder of the year and earned a spot on the All-Big East First Team. This is the third year in a row that a Golden Eagle has been given this honor (Leigh Steiner in 2024 and Lydia Foust in 2023). Bodner started all 16 contests in 2025, averaging 2.8 goals per game and 5.6 shots per game with a 0.763 shooting percentage.

Marquette women’s lacrosse (10-6, 4-3) was playing its game against Eastern Michigan University (8-8) Friday afternoon with something on its mind other than the matchup — their postseason chances. The only way the Golden Eagles could clinch a spot in the Big East Tournament is a Georgetown win against UConn Saturday. Eastern Michigan had already clinched its conference tournament, so the Golden Eagles were alone in postseason uncertainty.

In its Big East regular season finale, Marquette women’s lacrosse needed a win against Georgetown to clinch its spot in the conference tournament — a chance head coach Meredith Black and her squad missed out on by three goals last season. Last time Marquette women’s lacrosse (8-5, 2-2 Big East) faced Villanova (9-4, 2-2 Big East) in the final regular season game of the 2024 season, the Wildcats closed the postseason door for the Golden Eagles, 17-14. Despite both teams coming into the game with even records, the result from last year would portend the fate of this year’s matchup. Marquette was dealt a 15-8 loss to Villanova and its second straight Big East loss on Sunday morning.

To say Marquette women’s lacrosse opened Big East play with a bang would be an understatement. For the second game in a row, senior attacker Meg Bireley made Golden Eagle history. After Marquette’s (6-3, 1-0) 16-5 win over Butler (0-6, 0-1), she now stands as the all-time goal scorer in program history with 181 goals — six above Grace Gabriel’s record that had stood for six years prior. Bireley only needed one goal to break the record today, but she scored six instead.
