Ciardi came to Maryland as a pitcher but didn’t have the 6-foot-5 presence on the mound that could intimidate hitters. Although he knew he was undersized, he always felt he could pitch against the best. Ciardi majored in business and marketing and pitched for Maryland baseball from 1979-83 (redshirting in 1982) while on scholarship. He worked his way up in the rotation, starting the season in the bullpen during his freshman year. Halfway through his first year, he became a starter.

Haight, who is entering his 24th year with Good Counsel, has letters on file from former players. When a younger player makes varsity and receives their jersey, a letter from the alumni who wore that number comes along with it.
