    During President Donald Trump’s first months in office, he signed more than 120 executive orders. The Financial Times reports that more than 100 legal challenges have been filed against these, including by federal judges. Former president Joe Biden signed 162 orders during his 4-year term. During Trump’s term from 2017 to 2021, he signed 220 orders. In eight years, Barack Obama signed 277 and George W. Bush signed 291.

    The Monroe County Republican Party barred WFIU/WTIU News and a couple other people from attending its monthly meeting, held at The Warehouse on Tuesday. The party’s guest speaker was, Caleb Shumaker, whose previous involvement with the National Youth Front and social media presence prompted online questions and pushback.

    Next door to the headquarters of Malibu House, there’s another for-profit addiction recovery operation in Bloomington called Impossible the Movement. A neon sign with the logo is in the window. Malibu House is a group of at least five sober living homes that started about a year ago. A recent WFIU/WTIU News story about Malibu House questioned the business’s transparency about its for-profit status, co-owner Max Meckes’s name change, and his long record of arrests.

    In less than a year, Max Meckes has opened five sober living homes and a headquarters in Bloomington. Taxpayer money and donations from non-profits have helped sustain the operation, called Malibu House. Malibu House’s Facebook page describes obtaining food, beds, appliances, computers, and other items for the homes, but it’s often ambiguous about whether they were purchased or they were gifts.

    The IU Divestment Coalition gathered outside the Monroe County Courthouse Tuesday to support two protesters who were arrested on charges of disorderly conduct. Some members remained outside while others packed the court room to hear Judge Mary Ellen Diekhoff assign a public defender for both Anna Sowka and Camryn Tuggle.  Court records say Sowka and Tuggle are charged with two and one counts of disorderly conduct, respectively.
