IntroductionOur understanding of the geomagnetic field and its variability (secular variation) comes from measurements of the field, both instrumental and paleomagnetic, and various types of models. (See Merrill et al. (1998) for review.). One key to unraveling the core dynamo mechanism(s) that generates the field is the pattern of directional field variability (poloidal field) at the Earth’s surface.
