Following talks between Indian defence minister Rajnath Singh and his Chinese counterpart Admiral Dong Jun in Laos recently (on the sidelines of an ASEAN conference), the Chinese Defence Ministry spokesperson Sr. Col. Wu Qian came out with an interesting comment: “We look forward to harmonious dance between the Chinese dragon and Indian elephant with concerted steps.” (re: THE HINDU, November 29, 2024).

The simmering border conflict between India and China in the Himalayan region has come to an end, with both nations committing to cooperate in resolving their border disputes. Both countries recognise that such conflicts hinder the progress of peace and prosperity in the region, posing obstacles to establishing a multipolar world and the democratisation of global geopolitics.

These are conducive times for India and China to forget the past regrets and move towards a new relationship based on sincere friendship and peace. It is possible that India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and China’s President Xi Jinping may soon (October 22-24) meet bilaterally on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia.

Narendra Modi, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) foremost leader, is, as of June 9, 2024, in his third consecutive five-year term in office as India’s Prime Minister. But unlike his earlier two terms in office, when the BJP had a majority in Parliament, he now heads a coalition government. A business-as-usual line of action, however, seems to be carrying the day.
