CHANGING THE FOCUS: It’s time for senators to start invoking their privilege on the GOP megabill. Today marks the start of the latest key stretch in the Republicans’ effort to craft a large fiscal package — a four-week work period in Washington (at least for the Senate) in which GOP lawmakers are aiming to get that measure to President Donald Trump’s desk. It’s certainly possible that timeline could slip deeper into July.

A BREAK FROM THE FUN: The Senate returns next week to take center stage in the debate over the one big, beautiful bill, after a couple months where the large fiscal package seemingly stood on a knife’s edge in the House. But already, the Senate GOP’s terms are starting to be laid. Sens. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.) both took to television over the weekend to call out what they see as a poor House product, though neither specifically criticized the other chamber’s approach on taxes.

The House Ways and Means Committee approved Republicans’ sweeping tax package Wednesday, after a marathon hearing in which they shot down a string of attempts by Democrats to rewrite the plan. Approval came on a party-line 26-19 vote, and sends the bill — stocked with tax cuts and some notable tax hikes on GOP targets like Ivy League colleges — on to the chamber’s Budget Committee.
