THE REDBIRD REVIEWHey, the Cardinals are weird. Not so much the people, but the players and pitchers. Some of their performance stats don’t make a whole lot of sense. And that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Why? Because in my opinion the overall wackiness and whimsical nature of the early-bird 2025 Cardinals is part of the appeal that makes them so entertaining. Well, most of the time, anyway. It’s an unpredictable lot of ballplayers.

And a pleasant Thursday to you ... The Cardinals are off today, so this will give them time to rest -- and give their fans time to restock the medicine cabinet with antacid... Replacing Dave Duncan as pitching coach has to be one of the most thankless jobs in professional sports. It’s the baseball equivalent of James Spader trying to replace Steve Carrel as the star of the hit television series, "The Office."Best of luck with that. Duncan was Tony La Russa’s pitching sage for 16 seasons in St. Louis. The Cardinals made it to the playoffs nine times, won three NL pennants and hoisted two World Series trophies.

Happy Friday to you. I'll be brief, because I'm off to a late start today, and there are Bits to process and write for Saturday's print edition. Today's topic:Should the Cardinals be concerned with the hitting performance of center fielder Jon Jay? Well, that's their decision. But Jay's numbers are alarming. He's been a different hitter, and a much lesser hitter, since injuring his right shoulder early in the season.

Good afternoon. It's the start of a new week, and there's a lot going on. Locally, our attention is focused on Busch Stadium. Monday night the Cardinals open an important four-game series against the LA Dodgers, and the home team will try to continue building on the positives we saw during their weekend sweep of the Chicago Cubs. Nationally, the story is the NCAA and Penn State; you'll find some brief comments on that at the end of this blog.
