It seems like AI is everywhere these days, with new applications popping up like dandelions when you update your phone or laptop. So it’s no surprise I’m getting questions about how artificial intelligence is affecting the news you read – particularly in The Enquirer and on Cincinnati.com. The paragraph you just read, commonly referred to as “the lede” in our business, was written by me, off the top of my head and not enhanced by AI.

Andy Furman sends us a lot of mail. Not email but actual mail. Stamped and postmarked letters in #10 envelopes. I can’t be sure, but it looks like he uses a typewriter to address them. Furman, a PR professional, occasional Enquirer contributor and broadcaster who hosted 700 WLW’s sports talk show for 18 years, often sends me clipped articles from other publications that chronicle the challenges facing the newspaper industry. Yes, he knows he can email a link. But that’s not his style.

I have one of those jobs that invites interesting questions at social events. Lately, I’ve been asked for my take on the Trump administration’s decision to ban the Associated Press from White House press briefings after the news organization said it was sticking with the name “Gulf of Mexico” despite the executive order changing it to “Gulf of America.”Like most First Amendment advocates, I find the ban worrisome.
