    Claus-Dieter Ehlermann, a “giant” of the legal field and former head of the EU’s competition watchdog, who was behind a push to modernise European antitrust policy, has passed away. He was 94. Ehlermann was pivotal in building out the European Commission’s formidable legal service and later shaping its influential antitrust enforcement arm. He joined the legal service in 1961 and was appointed to head the department in 1977 – a post he would hold for 10 years.
