Every week, for the last 24 years, I have written a gardening article for several local newspapers. At age 89, I feel it’s time to retire while I still have a few working brain cells. kAmxE 92D 366? G6CJ 7=2EE6C:?8 H96? D@>6@?6 >6?E:@?D E96J 6?;@J65 D@>6E9:?8 x HC@E6[ 6G6? H96? E92E A6CD@?

Is your yard a bit boring? Pretty much all green? Green is nice if you are Kermit the frog, but a little color makes your corner of the world much more interesting. Just a few flowering shrubs, especially the kind that feed the birds, will make your place wake up. Here are a few suggestions. kAmq=24< 49@<636CCJ :D 2 H6==\?2>65 ?2E:G6] x? Bunkey was watching Rachel Madow one evening and was disturbed by a constant thumping noise from the dining room. It finally got so annoying that he got up to see what the devil was going on. He turned the light on just as his cat Paddy dashed himself against the glass door. He was attempting to grab the June bugs that were hitting the glass. June bugs? They shouldn’t be here for at least six weeks. Blame climate change. Those 90-degree days might have encouraged an early hatch.

Old fashioned lilacs are blooming now. They tell us that it’s finally spring. One bad habit they have is getting too big or too tall for their spot. It is fairly easy to reduce them to manageable size, you just cut them down to about six to eight inches. They will pop up and bloom again in about three years. If you would rather not go to all that trouble, you have probably planted "Miss Kim," a syringa patula cultivar. The breeders paid attention and have developed improved forms of that cultivar.

Horace Geeley wrote “go west” but don’t go to Minnesota because you can’t grow apples there. The University of Minnesota’s apple experts reply is, “we’ll see about that!” They introduced their first cold hardy apple, the Minnehaha, in 1920 and since then have had a long list of cold-hardy apple successes. You will recognize many of these names. kAmx? `haa E96J :?EC@5F465 E96 w2C2=D@?[ :? ‘af E96 r6?E6??:2= rC23[ :? ‘be E96 q624@?[ :? ‘c_ E96 !C2:C:6 $AJ[ :? ‘cb E96 r@??6= #65 2?5 E96 u:C6D:56] x?
