CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Ten-year-old Chesapeake resident Grace Franco has come a long way since her mom first enrolled her in swim lessons at the Chesapeake YMCA more than six months ago. “She started off just being at the shallow end and a lot of playing at the steps,” said her teacher Ro Marquez. Since then, she's come a long way!“We’re working with her on going the length of the pool and even treading water in the deep end. She’s doing great,” said Marquez.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Students at Hodges Manor were excited during the school assembly to hear they were getting new books. “I have a [manga] book called ‘Snakes.’ Ooh, that’s cool!” one student exclaimed. “Sparkle queens! What do sparkle queens do? They actually clean up their mess and they sing wonderful songs,” said Aubrey Cox, a kindergartner.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Eli Mackey, a seventh-grader from Hampton, is making waves by transitioning from author to podcaster. In August, he penned a nonfiction book about turtles, and now he has launched his podcast, "Turtle Talks and Nature Walks."“I’ve started the first episode of my podcast,” Mackey said. He credits the Bennett Center, a Virginia Beach nonprofit, for helping him turn his creativity into a business.
