Australia has entered the ‘era of climate consequences’, with the vast majority of Australian households already impacted by climate change. Climate pollution from the burning of coal, oil and gas is fuelling increasingly severe bushfires, floods, heatwaves and destructive storms. As a result, the overwhelming majority (84%) of Australians report being directly affected by at least one climate-fuelled disaster since 2019.

It was no surprise when I read about the latest climate record to be broken – February was the hottest month on record globally. Not an isolated temperature anomaly, it was the ninth month in a row to break such a record. And here in south-east Queensland I’ve felt it. It was the most uncomfortable and the sweatiest summer I’ve experienced yet (I’m less excited than ever about the prospect of entering the “hot flush” phase of life).

“Hey look over here, all this coral is dead!” This was the sobering statement shouted by my husband as we snorkelled from the boat over to the reef. In disbelief, I looked at my daughters and swam over to see for myself. The sight of the dead coral is a moment of reckoning. Over the past 14 years we have regularly dived this reef delighting in soft and hard corals, seeing reef fish and other marine life including turtles.
