CAPE MAY — Simms Sinclair may be disappointed that City Council is considering banning dogs from a new nature trail under construction near Lafayette Street. “He has been waiting for years to have a stroll along the park,” said Peter Cole, a Cape May resident and the owner of the white cockapoo. Cole attended the Tuesday City Council meeting, without Simms, as the city governing body approved a list of rules for the path, set to open this month.

OCEAN CITY — Under increasing pressure on spending, Mayor Jay Gillian promised a hiring freeze for the city before a final vote on a $112.5 million budget. The budget, approved Thursday with a single vote in opposition, increases the local tax rate by about 3%. That’s above state limits on rate increases, but the city had “banked” the difference from previous budgets that were under caps, allowing the increase.

UPPER TOWNSHIP — A piece of Strathmere history is up for sale at a little under $5 million. Twisties Tavern on the Bay at 236 S. Bayview Drive has long had a devoted following, even during those years when it opened sporadically and just often enough to keep the liquor license active. The tavern traces its roots to Prohibition, purportedly starting as a speakeasy in 1929 until alcohol was again legalized in the United States in 1933.

MIDDLE TOWNSHIP — As New Jersey headed toward a referendum on whether to legalize weed, Christopher Leusner advocated against it. Now, he expects to cut the ribbon on a new cannabis dispensary in town, and welcomes the additional revenue the business will bring in. Leusner is in his second year as mayor and looking for ways to fund township spending, including from a 2% tax on weed sales.
