Dogs gone from Cape May nature path?

CAPE MAY — Simms Sinclair may be disappointed that City Council is considering banning dogs from a new nature trail under construction near Lafayette Street. “He has been waiting for years to have a stroll along the park,” said Peter Cole, a Cape May resident and the owner of the white cockapoo. Cole attended the Tuesday City Council meeting, without Simms, as the city governing body approved a list of rules for the path, set to open this month.
Facing budget blowback, Ocean City vows to freeze new city jobs

OCEAN CITY — Under increasing pressure on spending, Mayor Jay Gillian promised a hiring freeze for the city before a final vote on a $112.5 million budget. The budget, approved Thursday with a single vote in opposition, increases the local tax rate by about 3%. That’s above state limits on rate increases, but the city had “banked” the difference from previous budgets that were under caps, allowing the increase.
Twisties in Strathmere for sale for close to $5M

UPPER TOWNSHIP — A piece of Strathmere history is up for sale at a little under $5 million. Twisties Tavern on the Bay at 236 S. Bayview Drive has long had a devoted following, even during those years when it opened sporadically and just often enough to keep the liquor license active. The tavern traces its roots to Prohibition, purportedly starting as a speakeasy in 1929 until alcohol was again legalized in the United States in 1933.
Middle Township approves budget, looks forward to weed cash

MIDDLE TOWNSHIP — As New Jersey headed toward a referendum on whether to legalize weed, Christopher Leusner advocated against it. Now, he expects to cut the ribbon on a new cannabis dispensary in town, and welcomes the additional revenue the business will bring in. Leusner is in his second year as mayor and looking for ways to fund township spending, including from a 2% tax on weed sales.

Facebook post questions Morey’s parking ticket in Wildwood

WILDWOOD — An image of a parking ticket recently posted to a Facebook group drew extensive interest over the weekend, because the ticket was not from the city. Printed on top was the logo for Morey’s Piers, which in addition to its amusement piers in Wildwood and North Wildwood owns parking lots near the Boardwalk. The original poster asked whether he would be paying the parking fine to Wildwood or Morey’s.
No update on Sunset club as work continues at Higbee Beach

LOWER TOWNSHIP — On an overcast evening, cars lined Sunset Boulevard and crowded the parking lots as sundown approached. As the weather warms and the shore crowds swell, expect the spot on the Delaware Bay to get even more popular. A fraction of the numbers gathered to watch the sunset, gather the sea-polished quartz known as “Cape May diamonds" or get a look at the remains of the concrete ship Atlantus will venture farther, into the Higbee Beach Wildlife Management Area.

OCEAN CITY — City Council is set to talk about a potential property acquisition behind closed doors Thursday. By law, most of council’s discussions have to take place at public meetings, but there are some exceptions, including for negotiations. Even though members of the governing body can reach a consensus at a meeting that excludes the public, a vote would have to take place in public.
More money needed for new Cape May police building, officials say

CAPE MAY — Costs for a new police station on Lafayette Street could be double what the city has already bonded, city Administrator Paul Dietrich said Monday. “We need more money for it,” he said. Dietrich is set to present a capital plan to City Council on Tuesday, which he said will be in line with the city’s investments in infrastructure in previous plans.
This year, Middle Township students watched a cow grow

MIDDLE TOWNSHIP — Contrary to Bart Simpson's instruction, these fifth-grade students will have a cow, man. This year, students in Jessica Dorta’s homeroom at Middle Township Elementary #2, all 10- and 11-year-olds, participated in a virtual adopt-a-cow program through Discovery Dairy. In September, the students adopted “Mootilda” from Kurtland Farms in Pennsylvania. That’s meant tracking the dairy cow’s growth and getting monthly updates on her life at the farm through the program’s online portal.
