The AL UR PAL PROJECT is a US music collective led by veteran Chicagoan singer, songwriter, and producer, AL WORDLAW. Al’s CV tells us that he began writing music at age fourteen and after graduating from Harlan High School, he began his music career in gospel. Finally “going secular”, he’s released a slew of music, notably the EP, ‘Stay With Me’.

One of last year’s most acclaimed soul albums was JESSIE LAINE POWELL’S ‘My Love Journey’ … a lovely, sophisticated cocktail of smooth jazz and adult soul.

One of this year’s big tunes has been ’80/20 Rule’ from Brit soulstress, ANDRIAH ARRINDELL. The proud East Ender has a decent CV – she’s worked with people like H-Town, Alexander O’Neal, Shola Ama and Nona Hendryx and worked with Madonna and The London Community Gospel Choir for Aretha Franklin’s London Music Hall of Fame induction and also enjoyed a top 10 Urban chart hit, a collab with Whytepatch ‘See You Dance Dance’.

2024 saw battle-hardened UK soul vet, RAY HAYDEN make a major comeback with his OPAZ music project. The most recent offering from the “project” came in April this year with a single, ‘How Do You Lose Yourself?’. This was a soulful cut featuring a big and emotional vocal from a NEERA.

Good to welcome back UK band DOWN TO EARTH (essentially, vocalist Lol Williams and guitarist Stevie Paul) as they line up a new soulful single, ‘You Keep Coming Around’ . This one’s a lazy, meandering ballad with a searing lead vocal from BOBBIE SHEPPARD. ‘You Keep Coming Around’ sounds like the perfect soul tune to enhance the vibe for those late afternoon summer sunshine bar-b-ques. Out June 6th.

KLASS 1 is a soul harmony group – new to us, though my guess is that the band members have been in the business for some time – as witnessed by their slick, polished sound. They’re setting up the release of their first CD album ‘The Way It Should Be’ and they’ve prefaced the launch with a double A sided single that pairs ‘The Way It Should Be’ with ‘Care 4 U’. The former is a mid-tempo cut with smooth harmonies and a feel of bands like Boyz II Men and New Edition.

US singer/songwriter KENDRA MORRIS continues her upwards trajectorywith a new single –’If I Called You’. This one sits on the cusp of blue-eyed soul and quality pop – the clear influence is the music of the Brill Building, though the rocky guitar solo would have raised more than a few eyebrows back in the day. This cut’s main attraction is its simplicity; like all great pop it’s built around three chords and the melody’s catchy and breezy.

Since 1988 UK collectors’ label ACE RECORDS have enjoyed the rights to US label SPRING RECORDS and this year they’ve started to release specially commissioned mixes of a number of Spring classics under the banner “Spring Revisited”. Latest track to get this special treatment is GARLAND GREEN’S Sending My Best Wishes’. Garland’s original version first appeared in 1974 as the B side to his Spring single, ‘Sweet Loving Woman’ and since then it’s gained huge traction of the underground soul scene.

Chicago-born singer/songwriter/guitarist JAMES “SOUL” HOLVAY is one of the music biz’s great survivors . In the 60s he was a prominent songwriter penning a ‘Kind Of A Drag’ which the Buckinghams took to the top of the US pop charts in 1967. That was followed by leading his own band, The MOB before he eventually turned his back on the music biz.
