As has been the case over the last few years, the high school tennis power in the Eastern Panhandle revolves around Jefferson and Washington high schools. Judging by the combined strength of the Cougars and Patriots, championships, both in the EPAC and WVSSAC’s Region II, state championships can be within reach. What seems to be the common denominator among the county’s two high schools is doubles.

When John Lowery was tasked with launching a new baseball program at a new, consolidated high school some 53 years ago, right away, he knew exactly what needed to be done. “First, you have to have a vision for what you want in a new program,” Lowery recalled, going back to 1972, when Charles Town, Harpers Ferry and Shepherdstown High School’s merged to form Jefferson High School.

HUNTINGTON — Jefferson County’s two high schools combined to pull off a wrestling trifecta at the WVSSAC championships on March 8 at Marshall Health Network Arena in Huntington. One wrestler regained his state championship, one successfully defended her crown and the third won her first state title as a freshman.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — Following upset-wins over East Stroudsburg and California (Pa.), Shepherd was on the doorstop of a first NCAA Division II Tournament bid on Sunday at Butcher Center in Shepherdstown. Instead, a 29-point performance from tournament most valuable player Pace Prosser, coupled with sub-par first half shooting by the Rams, set up a 74-58 win by top-seeded Gannon over the Rams in the PSAC championship game, which ends Shepherd’s season at 21-11.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Knowing it had embarrassed Martinsburg on its home floor, 66-54, on Feb. 10, Washington expected a much different Bulldogs squad to come out on the floor Tuesday night, this time with the Class AAAA, Region II co-championship on the line. The third-seeded Patriots figured they'd face intense pressure by Martinsburg's defense. They were right, but it ended up being a little more than the Patriots could handle.
