Written by Bill ClarkPart 2 – Our Journey from Liver Failure to TransplantContinued from Part 1“A new liver.”That was Becky’s answer pretty much every morning from her ICU bed when the medical team doing rounds asked if there was anything she needed. It was true. My wife needed a healthy liver to survive. That was why we were there. We had come to the University of Texas Southwestern (UTSW) hospital in Dallas to find out if Becky was a candidate for a liver transplant.

Written by Bill ClarkPart 1 – Our Journey from Fatty Liver to Liver FailureBecky’s fight is our fight. That became my “rallying cry” early on when my wife was diagnosed with liver disease last year. In hindsight, if we had known how perilous this journey could become, perhaps we would have taken some different turns over the previous ten years. That rallying cry may have sounded very different early on. But let me back up a little.

O-Dark ThirtyIt’s 4:30 in the morning. I have been awake for a little more than an hour. My plan is to start packing up by 5:30 so I could begin my assault on Katahdin by 6:00. It was a warm and muggy night. I didn’t sleep well. In part, due to the weather, but truth be told – it was more about the anxiousness associated with the big day that lay ahead. When I last updated you, Dash and I had just entered New Hampshire and we had just finished visiting with my wife and daughter. It was now time to get ready for the gauntlet the AT was about to throw at us: The Presidential Mountains, the Wild Cats, the Mahoosucs and the Bigelows to name but a few.

MusingsHaving just made it to New Hampshire, there are now only two states remaining. Unfortunately, they are arguably the hardest two states as it pertains to terrain and the effort required. I hope the 1800 miles that I now have on my legs has adequately prepared me for what lies ahead or at least will minimize the suffering to come. At a recent town visit I frequented a Chinese restaurant to refuel. At the conclusion of my meal I reached for my fortune cookie to see what was to be my fate.
