The transformation needed for organisations in the UK to be ready for the threat of post-quantum computing will make preparations for the millennium bug, which threatened computer systems in 2020, “look easy," cyber chiefs said today. Ollie Whitehouse, chief technology officer of the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), said that preparing for post-quantum cryptography (PQC) will take “a complex change programme” and would be a “colossal task”.

The government is to roll out passkey technology across its digital services this year as a simpler and more secure alternative to remembering complex passwords. Government websites will start offering the public the ability to use passkeys – cryptographic keys stored on phones or laptops – to log into government websites, including HM Revenue & Customs and NHS sites, over the next 12 months.

The UK is at risk of Russian cyber and physical sabotage attacks as Ukraine moves closer towards a peace settlement, the UK’s cyber chief has warned. Richard Horne, CEO of the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), said intelligence reports revealed a “direct connection” between Russian cyber attacks and physical threats to the UK. His warning follows assessments from MI5 that Russia is hiring freelance agents to conduct arson and other acts of sabotage in the UK.

AI-enabled tools will make it possible for attackers to exploit security vulnerabilities increasingly rapidly, giving organisations precious little time to fix security vulnerabilities before they risk a cyber attack.

Retail hackers are ‘wake up call’ McFadden will also urge businesses and organisations in the UK to take cyber security seriously following ransomware attacks on retailers in recent weeks, which the minister described as an “old fashioned shakedown”. “Cyber attacks are not a game. Not a clever exercise. They are serious organised crime. The purpose is to damage and extort,” he will say.
