    He wasn’t in the wrestling room. He wasn’t at school. Vic Balmeceda – one of the greatest wrestling coaches in the nation – spent Friday … at the beach. Balmeceda, who won 20 state titles in 32 years at South Dade High, including 18 championships in 29 seasons as a head coach, announced his retirement on Tuesday. Thus, he made the trip to Cape Canaveral with his wife Susan. Balmeceda, 54, and Susan have been married for 29 years, and they were high school sweethearts who first met at age 14.

    It was business as usual for South Dade on Saturday night, but a historic milestone for its wrestling program. The Bucs won their 20th IBT wrestling state championship at the FHSAA state finals after capturing the Class 3A crown at Silver Spurs Arena. The Buccaneers racked up 227.50 points, easily beating second-place Southridge with 154. “Coming in we looked very vulnerable because two of our wrestlers didn’t make weight (for the postseason),” South Dade coach Victor Balmeceda said.

    It was a historic yet bittersweet night Mater Lakes. The Bears won the Class 1A state championship - its first-ever IBT (individually-bracketed tournament) title just two months after winning their first Duals state title. Mater Lakes rolled up 212 points, beating second-place Zephyrhills Christian (149) by 63 points.

    Somerset Academy now has a Class 2A state title trophy to set next to its 1A trophy. Somerset moved up to 2A this season and promptly staked claim to the territory by winning the FHSAA state championship on Saturday at Silver Spurs Arena. Somerset rolled up 173 points, which was just enough to edge Tampa Jesuit (166), but it was a nail-biter down the stretch.
