    "Blackfoot people have been saying, 'We've lived on this land since the day of creation,'" says Dr. Eldon Yellowhorn, archaeologist and a professor at Simon Fraser University. The Blackfoot people say they have always lived here. Western science is slowly coming to the same conclusion, helped in part by the exceptionally low water levels of the past two years. "Because we have an oral history, the archaeological record is our only archive," Yellowhorn says.

    It's been 80 years since 14,000 Canadian soldiers landed on Juno Beach in Normandy, part of the massive Allied invasion that turned the tide of the Second World War. At the ceremony in France, just 13 veterans of the pivotal battle were able to attend. At the Military Museums in Calgary, there were just two veterans, neither part of that day. "They bled, they gave their all so that I and a few others could live," said Cpl. George Morasch, a Calgary Highlander.

    With the Oilers punching their ticket to the Stanley Cup finals on Sunday, the playoff buzz is still alive in Alberta. It marks the first finals appearance for the Oilers since the spring of 2006 when they lost to the Carolina Hurricanes. While many Flames fans may be conflicted, businesses are feeling a nice boost from the deep run, even if it's centred in Edmonton.

    For some people, gophers are nothing more than cute little critters. To others, they're a problem pest that needs to go. At least a few people in the northwest Calgary community of Kincora are in that second camp. In one community green space, every tree and rock has at least one big hole under it. Despite gophers being a key food source for many predators, the park seems to be the land coyotes forgot. At least one neighbour hopes the city doesn't forget, too.
