"Blackfoot people have been saying, 'We've lived on this land since the day of creation,'" says Dr. Eldon Yellowhorn, archaeologist and a professor at Simon Fraser University. The Blackfoot people say they have always lived here. Western science is slowly coming to the same conclusion, helped in part by the exceptionally low water levels of the past two years. "Because we have an oral history, the archaeological record is our only archive," Yellowhorn says.

It's been 80 years since 14,000 Canadian soldiers landed on Juno Beach in Normandy, part of the massive Allied invasion that turned the tide of the Second World War. At the ceremony in France, just 13 veterans of the pivotal battle were able to attend. At the Military Museums in Calgary, there were just two veterans, neither part of that day. "They bled, they gave their all so that I and a few others could live," said Cpl. George Morasch, a Calgary Highlander.

For some people, gophers are nothing more than cute little critters. To others, they're a problem pest that needs to go. At least a few people in the northwest Calgary community of Kincora are in that second camp. In one community green space, every tree and rock has at least one big hole under it. Despite gophers being a key food source for many predators, the park seems to be the land coyotes forgot. At least one neighbour hopes the city doesn't forget, too.

Students from Bowness High School went ahead with graduation ceremonies, but it was a sombre occasion coming the day after a 17-year-old classmate died after being hit by a train. A single vase with lilies stood by the main entrance of the school, which was closed for the graduation on Wednesday. A train conductor who has driven the route many times told CTV News they are required to sound the horn as they approach the two bridges crossing the Bow River near where the teen was hit.
Calgary clinic ending house calls to senior patients after billing changes

Changes by the province to physician billing codes are forcing a clinic to end home visits with senior patients. The Redel Clinic has offices in Edmonton and Calgary, sending physicians who specialize in geriatric care into seniors independent living homes to see patients. "It was a system that for the past decade was feasible," said Dr. Tanner Redel.

Black bear cub with 'severe neurological disease' euthanized in Banff

A black bear cub with signs of neurological disease was euthanized in Banff last week. The year-old black bear cub was found wandering alone on Banff’s Bow Valley Parkway and had “extremely poor body condition” and showed “signs of severe neurological disease,” according to a statement from Parks Canada. The cub was euthanized by parks staff on May 9.
