En 1996 apareció el primer teléfono celular inteligente o smartphone, el primer IPhone de Apple fue lanzado el 2007 convirtiéndose en un éxito mundial. Actualmente existen cerca de 8.000 millones de celulares (casi uno por habitante), su capacidad computacional es entre 1.000 a 10.000 veces la que tenía la NASA para llevar por primera vez el hombre a la luna en 1969 (González, 2023), y está aumentando constantemente, incluyendo la creciente aplicación de la inteligencia artificial.

Amnesty International’s Security Lab has just published Caught in the Net as part of the European Investigative Collaborations‘ Predator Files, which details a threat actor sending what they assess to be Predator infection links on social media in replies to Twitter / X posts by officials, journalists and other members of civil society. The Citizen Lab independently received and collected a set of since-deleted posts by this threat actor, which we call REPLYSPY.

The 1st of June 2023 saw perhaps the most exciting development in the targeted spyware research space in recent memory. The Russian government's Federal Security Service (FSB) released a statement indicating that they had detected a hacking campaign by the US National Security Agency (NSA) that compromised "thousands" of Apple iPhones within Russia.

Key FindingsIn 2022, the Citizen Lab gained extensive forensic visibility into new NSO Group exploit activity after finding infections among members of Mexico’s civil society, including two human rights defenders from Centro PRODH, which represents victims of military abuses in Mexico. Our ensuing investigation led us to conclude that, in 2022, NSO Group customers widely deployed at least three iOS 15 and iOS 16 zero-click exploit chains against civil society targets around the world.
