Cardinals have elected a new Pope as white smoke has risen from the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican City. The new pontiff was selected on what was the second day of the conclave. The 267th Pope will soon be revealed at the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica. Thousands were seen cheering and applauding as the new Pope wads confirmed shortly after 5pm UK time on Thursday. Some 133 cardinals entered the chapel on Wednesday to take part in the conclave which takes place behind closed doors.

Several people have been killed after a car ploughed into a crowd at a festival in Vancouver. Police said the vehicle drove into a crowd of revellers at the Lapu Lapu Day festival was taking place just after 8pm local time on Saturday. The exact number of fatalities is yet to be confirmed but police said several people had been killed. A 30-year-old Vancouver man was arrested at the scene and the department’s Major Crime Section is overseeing the investigation, police said.
