CHICAGO - A 4-year-old boy’s condition has improved after he was critically wounded in a shooting near Humboldt Park on Tuesday afternoon, Chicago police said. The boy was riding in a white Ford Escape driven by his grandmother about 3:50 p.m. in the 3300 block of West North Avenue when someone in a black Infiniti opened fire on their car and a silver Hyundai, according to a police report. When his grandmother heard the shots, she told the boy to "get down," the report said.

The family of a man killed Saturday by Carol Stream police say he was not a violent person and are demanding answers from authorities. “They shot my son down like he was a dog. He would not harm a fly,” Bonnie Pigram, the mother of 30-year-old Isaac Goodlow III, said at a news conference outside the apartment building where police shot Goodlow early Saturday morning. And Henry Pigram, Goodlow’s uncle, said he suspects the outcome would have been different if Isaac Goodlow III, 30, were not Black.

RAFAH, Gaza Strip — Hamas on Friday released 24 hostages who had been held captive in Gaza for weeks, including 13 Israelis, 10 people from Thailand and a Filipino citizen, according to Qatar and other officials, in the first stage in a swap for Palestinians prisoners in Israel under a four-day cease-fire deal. The hostages, women and children, were undergoing medical checks before they were to be transferred to Israel. They are to be taken to Israeli hospitals and reunited with their families.

United Airlines departures have resumed after being halted nationwide for a brief time Tuesday because of a technology outage. Federal officials said that United crews had been unable to contact airline dispatchers through normal means. “United asked the FAA to pause the airline’s departures nationwide,” the Federal Aviation Administration said on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter. The FAA said the issue was limited to United and its subsidiaries.

President Joe Biden’s administration on Tuesday released a list of 10 drugs for which the federal government will take a first-ever step: negotiating drug prices directly with the manufacturer.
