Back in 2014, we wrote columns saying without an honest education, one that teaches the truth of history, no nation will survive. In the 1770s, American colonists were literate — able to read, write and cipher with great competence. When Thomas Payne published “Common Sense,” it became the most read writing in America, even more than the Bible. Without this intellectual competence the American experiment wouldn’t have been possible.

We are reminded of something former Texas District Court Judge John Ellisor once said. As he sat on the bench in his courtroom he would look up and see his chair was located directly in line with the two swinging doors entering his courtroom. He said it was always a visual reminder that as judge he was not there to take sides but to be an honest referee, to make sure the rules were followed, and all parties were treated fairly. Several presidential administrations early in their terms talked about the necessity of more efficient government. In their rhetoric, taxpayers deserved value for their financial sacrifice. President Trump also promised efficiency, but unlike many of his predecessors, he is delivering. Elon Musk, Trump’s legally selected agent who’s not being paid for his services, has started to open the doors and shed light on how reckless and dangerous former federal spending has become.

In 2022, the United States exported $2.1 trillion in goods and $926 billion in services, that’s $3.02 trillion total. In 2023, that increased to $3.05 trillion. The United States is the second largest trading nation in the world, second only to the Communist Chinese. Over 75 percent of our consumption comes from goods and services from overseas. We import more than we export, causing trade imbalances.
