NEW YORK CITY — At 1:30 Wednesday afternoon, it was business as usual in Brooklyn around the Barclays Center. People walked to and from their offices. People ate lunch and shopped and tried to stay out of the oppressive heat as much as possible. We all knew that was going to change. Excitement was coming in the form of a kid from Newport, Maine. Maine came to Brooklyn on Wednesday, in the form of 18-year old Cooper Flagg, the Newport native who is the biggest name in American sports right now.

BAR HARBOR — One spot inches apart on the podium couldn’t come close to telling how razor-thin the gap was between Shealyn Brochu and Rowan Berry. A mere .28 seconds separated Morse’s Brochu (4:51.00) from Greely’s Barry (4:51.28) in the battle for first in the 1,600-meter run at Tuesday’s Class B track championships at Mount Desert Island High School. In the 800, Barry (2:13.60) prevailed (2:13.73) in an even tighter battle.

BAR HARBOR — In the end, there were no protests at the Class B track and field state championship at Mount Desert Island High School. No mob showed up with torches and pitchforks, wound up to vilify a teenager for her simple desire to compete. The mob didn’t need to make the trip Downeast. It’s dirty job was already done. The transgender Greely sophomore, an indoor state champion and the top seed in the girls pole vault, chose to not even attend the meet.
