The Outsmarters By Deborah EllisThis is definitely a Middle School/Young Adult read, full of shock and awe, The Outsmarters is a realistic fiction novel published in 2024. While reading this selection, I found myself feeling angry, sad, bewildered, and even happy at times. Some parts were ironically funny!Kate is a 12-year-old, very bright, middle school student, and has been expelled from school because of anger issues.

BIG is a children’s picture book with 3 major literary awards: National Book Award Finalist, The Caldecott Medal for illustrations, and a Coretta Scott King Honor Award for peace, non-violent social change and brotherhood. Uniquely illustrated by the author in soft shades of pink, purple, gray and brown, BIG has very few words; all of them important to the story and none, wasteful. Some of the events in the story are related to the author’s life.

Some editions have color tinted illustrations. Although it was published in 1944, it is a new, worthy read for those who have not read it. In 1945 it received a Newberry Honor, and in 2007 the National Education Association listed it as one of the Top 100 Books for Children.
