Free trade is terrible because it killed the middle class so we need to use tariffs to destroy the economy so we can remake it but tariffs are bad which is why we instituted them because we want other countries to remove theirs so we can have free trade which is great, actually.

It’s amazing how much of this debate is rooted in pure fantasy. Real U.S. manufacturing output today is more than *double* what it was in the 1970s. We produce a ton—just with fewer people, because we’re not using 70s-era tech anymore. Facts do not care about your feelings.

The dominant wing of the MAGA movement is simply not conservative. It’s about doing PR for Trump. If he decided tomorrow that he was a critical race theorist, many of these people would be on TV talking about white guilt. The ideology is whatever he says it is.

Wild how many people responded to this with some version of: “The early Congress passed tariffs you IDIOT!” Yes—*Congress* passed them. That’s the point. Not one guy who woke up one day & decided to upend the economy. The Founders built a system to stop exactly that.

Even if you like tariffs, it really is impossible to overstate how appalled the Founders would be with what's happening right now. They fought a revolution to ensure that one person did not have this much concentrated power. A true constitutional conservative cannot support this.
