It is still early days, although the summer transfer window is not yet going to plan for Arsenal. Mikel Arteta faces a significant summer after guiding Arsenal to just one final since replacing Unai Emery in 2019 – pressure is growing on the Spaniard as patience turns to expectation at the Emirates Stadium. There has already been one setback, as Nico Williams begins talks with Athletic Bilbao over a new contract, despite rumours Arsenal expected the Spain international to join.

West Ham are in need of a successful summer of recruitment after a terrible 2024/25 campaign. Last summer was an exciting one as roughly £150m was spent on new signings, but many – such as the £27m Niclas Fullkrug, who scored three goals in 20 games – were poor fits as West Ham ended up finishing 14th in the Premier League.

Liverpool and Chelsea are fighting to sign the same striker, but the Reds could now be moving away. Last week, Liverpool opened talks to sign Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt, the French striker who netted 22 goals and provided 12 assists in 48 appearances last season. However, Simon Phillips now claims on Substack that Chelsea have agreed terms with the 22-year-old. Now, Liverpool could be moving on from Hugo Ekitike as talks begin with AC Milan over Rafael Leao.

Arsenal are already losing ground to some rivals in the transfer market this summer. Liam Delap is heading to Chelsea – a striker Arsenal were encouraged to sign due to his £30m release clause. Arsenal also held talks over Bryan Mbeumo, but the Cameroon international has now decided to join Manchester United. Now, a player Arsenal expected to sign in Nico Williams has dealt Mikel Arteta and Andrea Berta another blow after starting talks over a new contract with Athletic Bilbao.

Newcastle United have suffered their first setback of the summer transfer window. Bryan Mbeumo has chosen to join Manchester United, despite the fact Eddie Howe was very keen on bringing the Cameroon international to Tyneside. The Brentford No.19 scored 20 goals in 38 Premier League appearances last season. TBR Football understand Newcastle United will not compete for Mbeumo any longer, as the Magpies feel Manchester United are paying too much – the deal looks set to cost over £60m.

The football opinions that come out of Paul Scholes’ mouth may actually be worse than the fact his daughter’s toes go in it Odious little man #CPFC

Jamie Carragher asked me about my FA Cup Final dilemma and whether I was going to take an offer of a TV appearance or watch the game with my family and friends in the Palace end. There was only ever going to be one winner. @WeAreTheOverlap. https://t.co/oAdtS5rpCX
