China is home to the world’s largest ageing population. In 2023, there were 216.76 million people over 65 years old: more than 15.4 percent of the total population and much higher than the global average of 10 percent.[1] China is on track to be a ‘super-aged’ society in 2030, when at least 20 percent of the population will be older than 65.[2] This demographic shift will have a profound influence on the nature of China’s economy and society.

As the past few years have illustrated so clearly, the Australia-China relationship is complicated. As such, it is crucial for Australians to develop a more nuanced understanding of China as this will help foster better engagement between our two countries. This is why it’s important to gauge how China is being taught in our higher education system. This is the focus of our new research project, Teaching China in Australia.

While the government is increasing investments, the growth in the provision of preschool education is far from meeting the needs of families. In China, preschool education is divided into preschool for 0-3 year olds and kindergarten for 4-6 year olds. At the end of 2021, the total kindergarten enrollment rate reached of the eligible population.
