1 INTRODUCTION Climate change is posing risks to humans and ecosystems which accelerate as global warming increases (IPCC, 2022a). Extreme events such as the exceptionally hot and dry spring/summer of 2018 in the Northern Hemisphere, the unprecedented Western North America heatwave, and the Western Europe flood of 2021 and their impacts give an indication of some of the challenges ahead (Apel et al., 2022; Vogel et al., 2019).
