1 INTRODUCTION Rice production forms the backbone of the food supply in Vietnam and has high economic significance as a source of income for smallholder farmers as well as the trade balance of the country. The area of rice production in Vietnam comprises 7.3 million ha (GSO, 2020) which makes Vietnam the 6th largest rice producer worldwide.
