Western swing, the hillbilly jazz hybrid made popular by Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys, gives the Best Westerns a name and a jumping off point. As players and vocalists, these half dozen ringers are among the best you’ll stumble across. Originally from Appleton, bassist Mark Hembree spent five years touring with bluegrass legend Bill Monroe.

In April of 1983 Chicago musician Rick Rizzo situated himself directly in front of Nick Cave’s microphone stand when The Birthday Party played Tut’s in Chicago. Rizzo recalls, “unknown to me at the time, I would be one of the fans he would drape himself over the whole show. The band was the most menacing bunch I've ever seen or hear—I left sweaty and awed. I’ve been a Nick fan ever since.” A mere 43 years later things have not changed much.

The Bay View Neighborhood Association, in partnership with Milwaukee County Parks, has announced the lineup for the 20th Anniversary Season of Chill on the Hill at the Humboldt Park Band Chalet. This year’s season opens on Tuesday, June 3 and runs 13 weeks until Tuesday, August 26. Show time is 6:30 p.m. Louie & the Flash Bombs, Pulpa De Guayaba, Long Mama, Jinksie, NileXNile and Lauryl Sulfate are among the wide variety of acts scheduled to perform.
