★★★ This movie was much better than it had any right to be. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

If you're just starting out shooting video and/or filmmaking with an iPhone then you really only need a few essential pieces of gear to get professional quality results. Yep, that's it. Now of course you can get a lot more, and later on you likely will do that, but for getting started you really only need a few things that I discuss in the video below.

Back in 2015 Sean Baker was an unknown indie filmmaker who made a name for himself directing the movie "Tangerine" - and that movie just so happened to be shot on an iPhone. Cut to March 2025 and now Sean Baker has more Oscars than Steven Spielberg. So what are you waiting for? Get out there and make your movie. In this podcast episode I talk more about that along with how even though indie films can do well today (winning multiple Academy Awards), it's still hard to make a living making them.

There's long been a debate about whether or not it's a good for indie filmmakers to shoot a movie with a phone. But of course in reality there isn't a debate about whether it's possible. It's definitely possible and has been successfully done numerous times. Including famously by recent Oscar nominated director Sean Baker ("Tangerine") and Oscar winning director Steven Soderbergh ("Unsane" and "High Flying Bird").

I think one of the biggest recent advancements in mobile filmmaking is the ability to record iPhone video directly to an SSD. This was brought about when Apple added USB-C to it's lineup and it was first available with the iPhone 15 Pro/Max. And at the time with the native camera app you could ONLY send out ProRes HQ. And that's actually still the case with the native camera and of course those files are huge and often not a great option for most things.
