On Tuesday 20 May, as rain pounded Taree and flood waters rose, eight people wheeled a grand piano on its castors across one of the town’s main streets and into an office block. The piano, worth $20,000, was saved and still sits, nearly two weeks later, in the office with employees working around it. But much of the rest of the stock from Bass ‘N’ Blues Music Megastore – including 180 guitars, 80 amplifiers and $100,000 worth of sheet music – was destroyed.

In a large field by the Taree greyhound track stands a huge pile of waterlogged and mud-caked waste, pulled from houses and businesses inundated by last week’s massive floods. Among the mound are couches, fridges and piles and piles of broken furniture. The heap represents the heartache and damage of the floods – people’s treasured possessions, and equipment they used to make their livelihoods.

Lithgow’s Main Street transformed into a frightful procession as thousands gathered for the town’s Halloween festival. Now in its 11th year, the event has become one of the Blue Mountains region’s largest and this year’s theme was ‘libre de faire’, meaning free to do. There were witches, Star Wars characters and the Grim Reaper – but best costume went to an original creation known as Spider Knight

Playful fledgling, Jack Zhi, United States – Category: Bird Behaviour - Silver award winner. This Peregrine Falcon fledgling had been flying for over a week and his skills had improved by the day. While he still took food from parents, he had started to practise his hunting skills. He was not good enough to catch live birds in the air yet, so he took baby steps by chasing a fluttering butterfly. He was certainly much faster than the butterfly and also nimble enough to keep up with it.
